Lemont sits just east of State College in the shadow of Mount Nittany, a small village of large Victorian houses built when the limestone quarries and the railway were making money here. The house at the first intersection is the one people mean when they talk about the Lemont House.

The legend attached to it is a marriage story. The house is said to have been built as a wedding present. The bride's husband died before or shortly after they moved in, and she would not live in the place, so her father built her another house further down the same street. What she left behind, according to the story, stayed. People describe a woman on the stairs and in the upper rooms, and the sense of a household continuing around them that has nothing to do with anyone currently living there.

The village adds a second layer. Lemont's older houses are known for concealed spaces, back stairs and cellars connected by passages, and local tradition holds that a tunnel running under the street once linked several of them and served the Underground Railroad. Whether the tunnel carried anyone to freedom is not documented, but the passages themselves are real enough that they have shaped every ghost story told here since. These are private homes.
