The Mizpah

Two separate witnesses, on two separate occasions, heard somebody in serious distress in the first stall of the ladies' lavatory. Both were too.

The Mizpah at Tonopah, Nevada is a five storey stone hotel from 1907, built when this was one of the richest silver camps in the world.

A woman is said to have died violently here, and the story is the hotel's best known. It is not documented and nothing is asserted about it in this entry.

What was filed in January 2007 is better than the legend. On two separate occasions, two separate witnesses heard somebody in great physical distress in the first stall of the ladies' lavatory in the hotel restaurant.

Both were concerned, and both were slightly embarrassed, because the obvious thing to do was ask whether the person was all right.

That reaction is the mark of a genuine report. Neither of them thought they were hearing anything but a woman in trouble.

Tonopah's silver made and unmade fortunes, and the mines killed men steadily.

The hotel is open.
