Tunnel 19
West Virginia · USA · Haunted site
She was on her way to be married, in her dress, and she went off the platform as a train was coming. The temperature drops at the mouth of the tunnel.
Tunnel 19 is one of several old railway tunnels running through North Bend State Park in West Virginia.
The account is set during one of the world wars. A woman on her way to her wedding, dressed for it, fell from the platform as a train was coming in.
Approaching the mouth of the tunnel there is a distinct drop in temperature, and that is the report everybody repeats.
A temperature change at a tunnel entrance has a straightforward physical explanation. Tunnels hold air at the temperature of the rock, they are cool in summer and mild in winter, and the air moves through them constantly.
That does not make walking into one at night any less unpleasant.
The old line is now a rail trail and the tunnels are open to walkers and cyclists.
