Webber's Wayside Inn
New York · USA · Hotel
A traveller from out of town, staying on an upper floor, had a heart attack one evening and died. He never left.
The account from this inn at Elbridge, New York is one of the oldest patterns there is.
A traveller from out of town was staying on the second or third floor. One evening he had a heart attack and died in the building.
He has been there ever since, and the people who work at the inn for any length of time will say so.
There is a particular sadness in the shape of it. He was a stranger passing through, with no connection to the place, and he ended up permanently attached to a building he had intended to spend one night in.
Elbridge sits on the old Seneca Turnpike, the main road west across New York State before the canal and the railways, and the inns along it existed entirely for people who were going somewhere else.
The building has traded under different names since. It stands on the main road through the village.
