Whitepath
Georgia · USA · Hotel
The northern part of this county carries the name of the Cherokee leader who lived here. He cursed whoever came after, as his people were marched west.
The northern region of Gilmer County, Georgia is called Whitepath, after the Cherokee leader who lived here.
Whitepath was a real man. He was a headman and a council speaker who resisted the adoption of white ways among the Cherokee, and he was old when removal came. He was put on the Trail of Tears with his people and died on the road, in Kentucky, before reaching the territory they were being driven to. A marker stands where he was buried.
Local account holds that he cursed any future owner of this land as he was taken from it.
A hotel built on the site burned to the ground early in the twentieth century, and people died in it.
Whether one accepts the curse or not, the underlying fact is not in question. This land was taken from the people who lived on it, by force, under a treaty most of them never agreed to.
The area is rural north Georgia.
