In the crypt of the mausoleum rests the conqueror Tamerlane beneath a sarcophagus of black jade, and tradition holds that whoever disturbs his rest will unleash a calamity worse than the man himself. On 20 June 1941 a Soviet expedition opened the tomb on Stalin's orders, despite old men pleading in vain for them to stop, citing the curse. Two days later Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa. Timur was reburied with full Islamic rites in December 1942 — and just over a month later the war turned at Stalingrad. The coincidence has made the tomb's curse one of the most talked-about in the world.
