Prisoners were lowered into the pit among scorpions and lice bred to eat human flesh — and the cold down there does not belong to the climate.

Visitors who look down into the hole today describe a cold that does not belong to the climate. This was the emirate's most feared cell: a pit more than six metres deep, covered by an iron grille and reachable only by rope. Here the emir lowered the prisoners he hated most, down among scorpions, ticks, rats and lice reportedly bred especially to feed on human flesh.

The pit lies in the shadow of the Ark, the ruler's citadel in Bukhara. Best known among its prisoners are the British officers Charles Stoddart and Arthur Conolly, who languished here for years during the Great Game, covered in sores, before being forced in 1842 to dig their own graves and beheaded on the square in front of the Ark.
