The Lake of Sighs and the Hill of Two Graves

Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng · Vietnam · Natural site

At the Lake of Sighs, the wind in the pines is said to carry drowned lovers' laments — and a girl in white to wait at the shore.

The Lake of Sighs outside Đà Lạt takes its name from the peculiar sound of the wind in the pine forest — by legend, the sighing of the dead. Here in the eighteenth century young Mai Nương drowned herself believing her beloved had fallen in war, and in the 1950s the lake claimed its second tragedy when a young couple was forbidden to marry; the girl walked into the water, and on the pine hill beside it lie the Two Graves that gave the place its other name. Visitors at dusk tell of a woman in a white áo dài standing motionless at the water's edge, dissolving as one approaches, and of sighs heard even on windless nights.
