Palace of the Beasts

Buenos Aires · Argentinien · Haunted house

In the gargoyle-clad palace of Villa del Parque, the bride Lucía is said to still dance her interrupted wedding waltz.

The five-storey palace on Calle Campana, crowned by a turret and dome and once covered in stone beasts, was built in the early 1900s by an Italian aristocrat as a wedding gift for his daughter Lucía. Leaving the celebration, her carriage and that of violinist Ángel Lemos was crushed by a train, killing them both on the spot. The father had the house sealed, and for decades neighbours told of lights, silhouettes and party music behind the shuttered windows. The palace now holds apartments – but stories of weeping and shadows in the tower persist.
