Opposite the church in Sievering a mighty village lime tree once spread its branches. On a summer afternoon a wedding was celebrated beneath it: up in the crown a plank chamber had been built for the couple and their closest kin, while below, around the trunk, nearly the whole village sat at tables and benches. The groom was badly drunk, shouting down at the dancers, throwing coins and spilling the wine. When the bells rang for the blessing the priest came out and asked them at least to let others keep their devotions in peace. The groom hurled a heavy bottle at him and told him to go to hell. The priest called down God's wrath on the blasphemers. A black cloud piled up over the Hermannskogel, lightning struck the lime, and the downpour drowned the place. Every guest was found dead — except the groom.
