The steep lane called Katzensteig — absorbed into Seitenstettengasse in 1827 — was the oldest link from the Kienmarkt down to the arm of the Danube, and for centuries it had a reputation. A great white cat is said to have walked the roof of one of the old houses at night, and the curious soul who came too near its uncanny prowl got its claws in the face. The legend explains why. In the house lived a man of dissolute life who, together with his mistress, resolved to be rid of his wife. The dishes were switched, and the poisoner ate the deadly mouthful herself. The poison made her believe she was a cat: she went on all fours, yowled, and raced across floors and roofs until she plunged from the highest ridge and broke her neck.
