In the cellar tavern Doctor Faust swallowed the pot-boy whole — then made the devil painted on the wall leap out alive among the guests.

Where the Freyung ran down towards the Tiefer Graben there stood in the 16th century a small house with a cellar tavern where artists and wandering students drank. One evening Doctor Johann Faust stepped into the merry circle. He asked the pot-boy not to fill his cup over the brim — or he would swallow him whole, skin and hair. The boy defiantly poured until the table swam, Faust opened his mouth wide, and the boy was gone. He was found soaked and shivering on the stairs outside. Then the talk turned to the devil, and the painter Hirschvogel drew him on the wall with a piece of charcoal. Faust rose and said he would show him alive. The room darkened, the drawing turned fire-red and coal-black, the eyes blazed, and with a thunderous roar the figure sprang out among the guests.
