J Ward
Victoria · Australien · Asylum
In the gold-rush gaol turned ward for the criminally insane, a young kitchen maid is said to take visitors by the hand — while something darker waits in the governor's bathroom.
J Ward in Ararat was built in 1859 as a gold-rush prison, but when the gold ran out its walls were taken over by the Lunacy Department and became the ward for Victoria's most dangerous criminally insane men. It operated until 1991, and three executed prisoners lie in unmarked lime graves in the yard. Visitors and guides tell of figures wandering the corridors and cells, and of a young kitchen aid in the basement kitchen said to grasp visitors' hands. In the governor's old bathroom, several describe instead an oppressive, malevolent presence that has turned both guests and ghost hunters back at the door.
