Horst Castle

At the stroke of midnight, a black coach drawn by six black horses is said to thunder down the avenue towards this moated castle in the Hageland.

Kasteel van Horst is a medieval moated castle with a pepper-pot keep, tucked into a green valley east of Leuven. Legend has it that the lord of the castle once shot his own chaplain dead at the altar in a fit of rage, and no one dared hold the powerful baron to account. After his death the castle never found peace: every night at midnight a black phantom coach, pulled by six wild black stallions, is said to race down the avenue and vanish into the keep while wailing voices fill the air. Today the castle is a protected heritage site, famous as the home of the comic-strip hero De Rode Ridder – but locals still tell of the ghostly coach.
