What turns urban explorers back at the Joseph Lemaire Sanatorium are the corridors: hundreds of metres of white tile, doors that slam shut behind you, footsteps that carry on after you have stopped. The spirits of former patients are said to move here, and visitors describe the sensation of never being alone in the empty operating theatre.

The sanatorium at Tombeek outside Overijse was built in 1936 as a modernist model hospital for tuberculosis patients, designed by Maxime Brunfaut with long sun terraces facing south. After a spell as a psychiatric institution the complex was abandoned in 1987 and has since decayed into one of Belgium's most notorious haunted sites — looted, graffitied and slowly swallowed by the forest.
