Sonian Forest
Bryssel (gränsar Flandern och Vallonien) · Belgien · Forest
In the mists of this beech forest southeast of Brussels, eyes are said to open suddenly and stare at lone walkers.
The Sonian Forest, the vast beech wood on Brussels' southeastern edge, is UNESCO-listed for its cathedral-like 200-year-old trees – and notorious for its fogs. According to a persistent legend, inexplicable banks of mist form here in which eyes suddenly appear, fixing themselves on the walker, and witnesses have described a gigantic shape moving within the fog. The stories recur in Belgian surveys of haunted places and have given the forest a reputation that changes the feel of an evening stroll. Today it is a beloved recreation area – but when twilight mist rolls in between the beech trunks, it is easy to see where the legend was born.
