Baldwin's Tower, Tsarevets
Veliko Tarnovo · Bulgarien · Fortress
In the southeast tower of Tsarevets fortress, the Latin emperor Baldwin of Flanders is said to have met his end – betrayed by a spurned tsaritsa.
After the Battle of Adrianople in 1205, the crusader emperor Baldwin of Flanders was captured by the Bulgarian tsar Kaloyan and, according to legend, imprisoned in the southeast tower of the Tsarevets fortress in Veliko Tarnovo. The tale goes that the tsaritsa fell for the handsome captive and stole into his cell in disguise – but when he rejected her, she denounced him to the tsar instead, and Baldwin was hurled from the tower. It has been called Baldwin's Tower ever since, and at night a foreign figure is still said to walk the battlements. Kera Tamara, sister of tsar Ivan Shishman, given away to the sultan for the sake of peace, is also said to keep watch over the fortress hill.
