In the little castle on Rua Apa a mother and her two sons were shot dead – and to this day no one knows by whom.

The turreted Castelinho of 1912 sits wedged beside the Minhocão elevated highway in central São Paulo. On 12 May 1937, the widow Maria Cândida and her adult sons Álvaro and Armando were found shot dead in the house; police ruled that one brother had killed the others and then himself, but the forensic report contradicted the version and the riddle was never solved. Through the decades of decay that followed, neighbours told of footsteps, weeping and laments behind the boarded windows. The house has been restored, but its reputation as one of the city's most haunted remains.
