Where the Poti and Parnaíba rivers meet lurks Cabeça de Cuia – the youth who killed his mother and was cursed to roam the riverbeds with a giant gourd-shaped head.

At the Encontro dos Rios in Teresina, where the Poti river joins the Parnaíba, dwells Piauí's most famous creature. Fisherman's son Crispim came home to yet another thin soup of bones and scraps, flew into a rage and hurled an ox bone that struck his mother's head and killed her. With her dying breath she cursed her son: he would wander the depths of the rivers forever, transformed into a monster with an enormous head shaped like a gourd. The curse can only be broken once he has devoured seven virgins named Maria – and to this day Cabeça de Cuia gets the blame when the river claims the drowned. A statue now keeps watch over the legend at the confluence, declared intangible cultural heritage in 2023.
