The lepers were brought here never to leave again — and in the 'city of pain' they are said to remain behind the strangling vines.

The area around the ruins was called cidade da dor, the city of pain, and the name has stuck. Some 300 leprosy sufferers were brought here to live and die in isolation, cut off from everything, and visitors today describe an oppressive sense that they never quite left the building — as if something were looking back out of the empty window openings.

The palace on the bank of the Rio Negro was raised in 1898 from European marble to receive immigrants in the heyday of the rubber boom, served for a time as a prison and became, in 1933, the Belisário Penna leper colony. Today giant apuí vines hold the walls in a strangling grip, and the ruins rank among the eeriest destinations in Amazonas.
