The Teatro José de Alencar, Fortaleza's magnificent 1910 art-nouveau theatre with ironwork shipped from Scotland, holds one of northeastern Brazil's most beautiful ghost stories. Across the stage and through the corridors floats the Bailarina Azul – the Blue Ballerina – a translucent dancer with long hair who continues her pirouettes and ballet steps long after the curtain has fallen. According to legend she never vanishes without first whispering: "I need to rehearse." Theatre workers have told of her for generations, and she has become a beloved part of the house's century-long history.
