São Paulo Municipal Theatre

Beneath the opera house stage, the footsteps of long-gone performers still move through the tunnels where they once passed unseen under the city.

Beneath the Theatro Municipal runs a network of underground passages, built so that performers and staff could move unseen below the city. It is down there that the legend lives: those who once passed through the tunnels are said to have left their souls behind in the dark. Staff tell of footsteps and voices under the stage floor when the house stands empty, and of a presence brushing through the boxes once the audience has gone home.

The opera house opened in 1911 as São Paulo's answer to the great stages of Europe, with marble, mosaic and crystal brought from Italy, and it was here that the legendary Modern Art Week was held in 1922. The address ranks among the city's most whispered-about.
