Franciscan Monastery of Halshany

Hrodna oblast · Vitryssland · Monastery

A young mason's wife was walled up alive in the monastery wall at Halshany – and to this day the White Lady lets night guests feel her wrath.

When the Franciscan monastery at Halshany was built in the seventeenth century, one of its walls collapsed again and again. According to legend, the masons decided to appease the building with a sacrifice: the first wife to bring her husband his meal would be walled into the structure. The lot fell on the youngest mason's young wife, who was sealed in alive – and the wall then stood firm. During renovation work in the twentieth century, a female skeleton is said to have been found in that very wall. The White Lady has haunted the monastery ever since, and overnight guests have told of cold hands, reflections in mirrors, and a presence with little patience for men under its roof.
