Bell Island Mine No. 2
Newfoundland och Labrador · Kanada · Mine
In the iron mines beneath Conception Bay, dead miners still roam — while the island's dreaded hag hunts the marshes above.
Bell Island off St. John's is billed as North America's most haunted island. In the iron-ore mines, which stretch far beneath the sea and claimed over a hundred lives, phantom miners are said to walk the tunnels around Mine No. 2, now a museum. Above ground rules the island's hag: a woman in white near Dobbin's Garden who transforms into a grey-ragged creature crawling on all fours, reeking of sulphur and paralysing her victims — by legend a girl murdered during the Second World War, when German U-boats really did attack the island. Canada Post gave the hag her own stamp in 2016.
