Deadmen Valley, Nahanni

Northwest Territories · Kanada · Natural site

The Dene have always avoided the valley — and when the search party reached the brothers' camp in 1908, they were still there, headless.

For generations the Dene regarded the valley with dread and avoided camping there. The gold prospectors Frank and Willie McLeod did not listen. They vanished in 1905, and when a search party reached their camp three years later, beside what is now Headless Creek, the brothers were still there — without their heads. Word spread through the northern gold camps, and other prospectors were said to meet the same end in the same valley.

The Valley of the Headless Men lies deep in the Nahanni canyon country of the Northwest Territories, where the Nahanni cuts between limestone walls a thousand metres high. The legend of the brothers' lost strike, the McLeod Mine, still lures adventurers into the valley, one of the least accessible wildernesses in North America.
