The Esther Cox House, Amherst
Nova Scotia · Kanada · Haunted house
Around 18-year-old Esther Cox, Canada's most infamous poltergeist erupted in 1878 — with threats carved into the wall above her bed.
A small house on Princess Street was the stage for the 1878–1879 'Great Amherst Mystery', Canada's most publicised poltergeist case. After an attempted assault at gunpoint, 18-year-old Esther Cox became the centre of inexplicable phenomena: pounding walls, flying objects, and the words 'Esther Cox, you are mine to kill' scratched into the plaster above her bed. Clergymen and doctors flocked to witness the spectacle, and actor Walter Hubbell lodged in the house and turned his diary into a bestseller. Skeptics dismissed it all as Esther's own doing — yet Amherst still celebrates its famous haunting today.
