Plains of Abraham
Québec · Kanada · Natural site
On the 1759 battlefield, fallen soldiers are said to appear in the evening haze, trailed by the smell of gunpowder.
Outside the walls of Quebec City, North America's fate was decided in 1759 when General Wolfe defeated Montcalm in a battle that mortally wounded both commanders. The plains are now an urban park, but local lore insists the battle's dead still walk: a lone soldier is said to stand at the entrance to Tunnel 1 on warm evenings. Visitors describe sudden whiffs of sulphur and distant cannon fire, especially on cold September nights around the battle's anniversary. The early-1800s Martello towers are likewise said to house restless sentries.
