The Screaming Tunnel
Ontario · Kanada · Tunnel
Strike a match at midnight in the stone tunnel — and the girl who burned to death is said to snuff it out with a scream.
The short limestone tunnel beneath an old railway embankment on the edge of Niagara Falls was built in the early 1900s as a drainage passage — but it is the legend that made it infamous. One night a nearby farmhouse caught fire, and a young girl ran screaming into the tunnel with her clothes ablaze, where she collapsed and died. The story goes that anyone who strikes a match against the tunnel wall at midnight will see it blown out as the girl's dying scream echoes through the dark. The tunnel has become a pilgrimage site for ghost hunters and even served as a location for the horror film The Dead Zone.
