Old San José Hospital
Región Metropolitana · Chile · Hospital
In the closed epidemic hospital beside the cemetery, smoking nuns appear alongside a doctor who walks through walls.
The hospital opened in 1872 at the height of the cholera and tuberculosis epidemics, separated from the General Cemetery by a single wall – the dead never had far to go. After closing in 1999, its long brick corridors became a cultural venue, but guards and staff testify to strange happenings. Nuns smoking in the shadows, a hooded friar, a doctor passing straight through walls and a woman in red in the old maternity ward are among the recurring figures. Many refuse to do night rounds alone.
