The Longfu Temple of 1452 was for five hundred years one of Beijing's mightiest temples, with one of the city's busiest markets outside its gates. When the temple was cleared and the Longfu Building rose on the site, the stories began: construction workers were said to find holes in the ground no pole could sound, reddish fox-like creatures darting through the site at night that could never be caught, and a run of collapses and sudden illnesses. Old Beijingers muttered that the stone toads laid down, in legend, by the mythical Liu Bowen had been disturbed, along with the fox spirits that guarded the temple. On the night of 13 August 1993 a huge fire devoured the store – 828 firefighters fought it for eight hours. The building was rebuilt but never recovered; the curse of Longfu became a byword in Beijing.
