Longbozi Road

Nanjing, Jiangsu · China · Road

On the dark Dragon's Neck stretch beneath Nanjing's city wall, fallen soldiers are said to walk the night still.

Longbozi, the Dragon's Neck, is the lonely road that follows the foot of the Ming wall below Purple Mountain, across ground where one of the bloodiest battles of the Taiping Rebellion was fought in 1864. Locals call it Nanjing's most ill-fated road: taxi drivers tell of passengers picked up in the dark who have vanished by journey's end, and night walkers describe circling endlessly without moving forward, as if unseen hands kept twisting the road. For years the stretch had no street lighting, which only fed the rumours of uniformed shadows glimpsed along the ramparts.
