Around Tianjin's great cathedral, the crying of infants is said to echo in the dark long after the doors are locked.

The French-built Xikai Cathedral with its three green domes is Tianjin's largest church — and the city's most talked-about haunted site. For generations, people in the surrounding blocks have claimed that in the dead of night they hear small children crying from within the cathedral grounds, though no one is there. The tales trace back to the dark rumours of the nineteenth century surrounding the city's Catholic orphanages, where children were whispered to vanish, a suspicion that once set all of Tianjin ablaze. Some night-time passers-by also tell of a figure in flowing robes gliding between the shadows of the domes.
