Durán Sanatorium
Cartago · Costa Rica · Sanatorium
On the mist-shrouded slopes of Irazú volcano, a phantom nun still drifts through the empty wards of the old tuberculosis sanatorium.
The sanatorium opened in 1918, founded by physician and former president Carlos Durán Cartín to treat tuberculosis patients in the cool mountain air above Cartago. Thousands lived and died here during the years of the "white plague", before the complex served as a prison and orphanage and was finally abandoned. Visitors and locals tell of nuns who walk the wards at night as if still tending patients long gone, of a little girl playing in the corridors, and of children's laughter and icy draughts behind closed doors. Protected as national heritage since 2014, the ruin is widely considered Costa Rica's most notorious haunted site.
