Bezděz Castle

At Bezděz a ghostly monk guards the Templars' hidden treasure in the Devil's Tower – the legend that gave Smetana an entire opera.

The Gothic royal castle of Bezděz rises alone on its volcanic cone in northern Bohemia and has been wrapped in legend since the Middle Ages, when the young prince Václav II was held prisoner here. Folklore says monks – Templars, in some versions – hid a treasure in the castle's Devil's Tower and sealed every passage; a ghostly monk has walked the walls guarding the hoard ever since, a tale that inspired Bedřich Smetana's opera The Secret. There are also whispers of a secret underground passage toward Bělá pod Bezdězem, never found but linked to unexplained phenomena. Climbing to the desolate ruin at dusk remains one of Bohemia's eerier experiences.
