Faust House
Prag · Tschechien · Haunted house
Through the roof of Prague's Faust House the devil is said to have dragged Doctor Faust to hell – and the hole could never be bricked up.
On Charles Square in Prague's New Town stands the Faust House, a baroque palace linked for centuries with alchemy and the dark arts – several of its owners really were alchemists. According to the legend retold by Alois Jirásek in the classic Old Czech Legends, Doctor Faust lived here until the devil came to claim his soul and burst out with him straight through the ceiling. The hole was bricked up again and again, but each morning the masonry lay collapsed and the black opening gaped anew. During renovations a sealed opening large enough for a grown man was in fact found in the stairwell ceiling – a discovery that has kept the legend alive.
