Loket Castle

Karlovarský kraj · Tschechien · Castle

Loket Castle guards a glowing stone – the petrified burgrave Půta, cursed by a poor widow – while a goblin called Štrakakal lodges in a cell.

Loket Castle rises on a rock in a bend of the Ohře river and has guarded western Bohemia since the 12th century. Legend says the cruel burgrave Půta of Ilburk was cursed in the 15th century by a poor woman refused respite from her taxes – and in an instant only a red-hot stone stood in his place. The stone, popularly linked to the castle's famous meteorite, is said to stir whenever thunderstorms roll in and Půta's rage echoes through the valley. Tradition also houses a small goblin named Štrakakal in one of the old cells: by day he roams the town's lanes, by night he returns to the castle.
