The vain chambermaid Eliška never found rest – she walks as Pernštejn's own White Lady, and her cursed mirror is still on display.
Pernštejn in Moravia is one of Europe's best-preserved Gothic castles – and home to a White Lady all of its own. The legend tells of the chambermaid Eliška, a celebrated beauty who spent hours before her mirror, neglecting both her duties and church; for her vanity she was denied peace after death and walks the corridors in white. A curse is said to rest on her mirror, still displayed at the castle: any young woman who looks into it risks losing her beauty. Guides also tell of mysterious symbols in the castle chapel and of a murdered daughter of the house who never left the walls.
