Convent of St Agnes

Prag · Tschechien · Monastery

The murdered nun appears around the convent — bloodied and weeping, or smiling, if the person she meets is unhappily in love.

Around the Convent of St Agnes, the old Poor Clares' house in Josefov, they tell of the zavrazdena jeptiska, the murdered nun. She was a wealthy nobleman's daughter who fell in love with a poor knight her father would never accept. As punishment she was sent to the convent to be forced into vows. The evening before she was to enter she slipped out to see her beloved one last time, and her father, enraged at the dishonour, drove a knife into her on the spot. Since then she is said to walk the convent walls. Met in anger she appears bloodied and sobbing; met gently she smiles, and tradition says she seeks out the unhappily in love above all — she is credited with striking the poison from more than one hand.
