The water sprite Kabourek sat in the corner of the pubs and paid for his beer with fresh fish. Wet footprints on the floor gave him away.

The narrow Certovka channel separates Kampa from Mala Strana and once drove the mill wheels that still stand there. In the water beneath them lives, the legend says, vodnik Kabourek, the friendliest water sprite in Prague. He was no drowner but a regular: he took the darkest corner of the taverns, drank his beer slowly, gave good advice to anyone who listened and paid the landlord in fresh fish. He was known by the puddle under his stool and the wet footprints towards the door. When radios and televisions filled the rooms with noise he lost patience and withdrew; since then he is said to roam the night streets of Mala Strana begging a bottle of beer. Give him one and you get a fish or a piece of advice back. His statue stands by the Grand Prior's Mill.
