The cannon tower at the end of Golden Lane was built in 1496 and became a prison at once. It takes its name from its first inmate, Dalibor of Kozojedy, locked up in 1498 for sheltering rebellious peasants. The darker reading holds that the violin was the rack, itself nicknamed housle, and that what people heard were his screams. The base of the tower is a doorless pit into which prisoners were lowered on ropes.
