Divoka Sarka
Prag · Tschechien · Natural site
Sarka had herself tied to the tree in the ravine as bait for Ctirad. When the trap sprang shut she threw herself off the cliff.
The wild ravine in western Prague takes its name from the woman who, in the legend, died here. After Princess Libuse's death the women of the land rose against the men under their leader Vlasta and fortified the stronghold of Devin facing Vysehrad. To capture the men's commander Ctirad, Vlasta had her warrior Sarka tied to a tree in the narrow gorge he was due to ride through, with wine and a horn set within reach. Ctirad saw the bound woman, took her for a victim and dismounted to free her. She blew the horn, the women poured out of the woods, his retinue was cut down and Ctirad was carried off and tortured to death at Devin. Sarka could not live with having been the bait and threw herself from the cliff into the valley that now bears her name.
