The devil took a job as monastery cook and served wine instead of water — until the abbot overheard what was being planned in the kitchen.

Charles IV founded Emmaus in 1347 for Slavonic Benedictines, and the monks there are said to have lived so piously that the devil resolved to collect their souls himself. According to the legend he took a post in the monastery kitchen. The food turned suddenly seductive: peas became creamy purees, cabbage was replaced by finely chopped chicken, and the water jugs held white wine. Full and befuddled, the monks slept through the hours while the little imps in the kitchen wrote down sin after sin. One night the sleepless abbot walked the corridors, reached the kitchen door and overheard the servants of hell planning how soon the whole house would fall into their lap. The tale was set down by Josef Svatek and Popelka Bilianova.
