Klementinum
Prag · Tschechien · Library
The librarian Jan went down during a thunderstorm and never came back up. When rain lashes the windows, his steps are heard beneath the floor.
Beneath the Jesuit college vaults and the baroque library run passages Prague has never fully mapped, and there the secret treasures of Rudolf II are said to lie buried. Their guardian, the legend insists, is no man but a thing of clay — a golem woken with kabbalistic formulas and set never to leave its post. The most repeated story concerns a young librarian named Jan, who on a stormy night in the reign of Joseph II went down into the cellars and never returned. Tradition says he was taken underground to guard the hoard for eternity. Ever since, dull footsteps and unfamiliar whispering are said to be heard under the floors exactly when rain beats on the Klementinum windows and thunder rolls over the Old Town.
