The widow had paid for a peal for every child the plague took. When she died with no coin left, the bells began to ring by themselves.

The Loreto carillon and its 27 bells have played the same Marian melody on every hour since the 17th century, and two legends explain where the sound comes from. The first concerns a rich merchant's daughter dying of plague who saw in her fever the Virgin surrounded by angels holding small silver bells; when the girl recovered, her father gave the carillon in thanks. The second, the one Praguers prefer to tell, is about a poor widow on Hradcany who lost every one of her children to the same epidemic. For each child she paid out her last silver coins so the bells would ring at the burial. When at last she died herself there was nobody left to pay for her — and the bells began to ring by themselves across the square.
