Prague's leaning tower stands on the Vltava where the Sitkovske mlyny once ground their grain, named for the miller Jan Sitko. It was built in stone in 1588-91 after several wooden towers burned, and now leans a good metre to the south-east. The water below was notorious: the current twisted unpredictably between the mill wheels and carried people off. The legend explains why. In the depths by the mills lived a hastrman, a water sprite, together with his offspring, and he was often seen sitting still on the bank stones or on a rock in midstream, watching the vessels glide past. Those who lived on the shore learned to read his mood in the water, and generations of milling families passed on what you never did here after dark.
