Twelve layers of graves lie stacked beneath the maples, and twelve thousand leaning stones crowd a plot that was never allowed to grow. Among them stands the Renaissance tomb of Rabbi Judah Loew, the most visited grave in Prague. Legend tells that during a plague epidemic Loew dreamt of dead children in white shirts dancing and playing between the headstones, and that he walked out into the dark cemetery, seized one of them and wrested away the list on which the next victims' names were written. When the names were struck out, the sickness stopped. Visitors still leave written wishes on the rabbi's tomb, trusting he grants them after death, and the stone itself is said to have shifted aside to make room for his grandson.
