Tetin
Prag · Tschechien · Church
Candles lit themselves over Ludmila's grave and a fragrance rose from the earth — so strong that her killer's patron built a church over it.
On the cliff above the Berounka lies the village where Princess Ludmila was strangled with her own veil on the night of 16 September 921, by two hired men the chronicles name as Tunna and Gommon. She was buried hastily outside the church walls, and what happened next became the legend itself. According to the Christian legend a fragrance rose from the grave surpassing anything spices or flowers could give, and people saw candles and torches burning of themselves in the silent darkness above the spot. Princess Drahomira, whom the legend names as the instigator, understood what the wonders meant and had a church built over the grave and dedicated to the Archangel Michael — so that anything happening there afterwards would be credited to someone other than the murdered woman.
