Rožmberk Castle

Perchta of Rožmberk, Bohemia's most famous White Lady, is said to still drift through her family's ancestral castle above the Vltava.
High above the Vltava valley in South Bohemia stands Rožmberk, ancestral seat of the powerful Rosenberg dynasty. This is the birthplace of the legend of the Bílá paní, the White Lady – Perchta of Rožmberk, forced in the 15th century into a miserable marriage with the brutal Johann von Liechtenstein, who is said to have cursed her on his deathbed. Ever since, she reportedly appears in a white gown with a ring of keys at her belt: a smile means good fortune, black gloves foretell a death in the family. The castle still displays a portrait said to depict her, and over the centuries guards and visitors have reported a white figure in the windows.
