Old Town Square, Prague
Prag · Tschechien · Urban site
Each year on the night of the execution's anniversary, the 27 beheaded Bohemian lords are said to return to inspect the Astronomical Clock.
On 21 June 1621, 27 leaders of the Bohemian estates' uprising were executed on Prague's Old Town Square – today 27 white crosses in the paving mark the site of the scaffold. Legend has it that the executed lords gather every year on the anniversary night: they emerge from St. Salvator's church, pause in silence where the block once stood, then walk to the Astronomical Clock. If the orloj runs true they return content to their graves; if it stutters or stands still, they read it as evil times ahead for the Czech nation and drift mournfully back into the Old Town lanes. It is among Prague's best-known ghost stories.
