Svojanov Castle

Pardubický kraj · Tschechien · Castle

At Svojanov, often called the most haunted castle in the Czech lands, the lady Kateřina starved to death in the cellar vault – and skeletons have been found walled into the masonry.

Svojanov in eastern Bohemia, founded in the 13th century, has earned a reputation as perhaps the country's most haunted castle. During the Thirty Years' War the lord Karel Záruba is said to have locked his wife Kateřina in the deepest cellar and left her to starve; finding her dead with her face twisted in terror, he had the body walled in, but she haunted him until he lost his mind. Renovations have indeed uncovered human skeletons sealed inside the walls, and the ghost of a small girl is said to wander between two bedrooms after being killed by falling scaffolding in the early 19th century. Staff, overnight guests and ghost hunters still report footsteps, cold drafts and apparitions.
